Community garden

Asalaamu alaikum sisters,

I wanted to share about a project Im suppose to coordinate this summer inshaAllah, it is a community garden out front of our Islamic center mashaAllah. I spoke with Remee (she is the program coordinator for the center) and it is not by any means off the ground and running yet, but we hope it will be soon, insha’Allah. Please make dua’a for all the efforts that will go into this project, as I am sure it will benefit many inshaAllah. Jazaisch Allah khair.

Outburts in Jummah Khutbah

Asalaamu alaikum sisters and brothers,
Yesterday alhamdulillah, I was able to attend the Juammah prayer here in my city. The brother giving the khutbah was talking about the different types of Ibadah and then went on to speak about our Ummah in Syria and the crisis they are in and how important it is to unite to help them during this time. An older brother sitting in the chair in the brothers sections started yelling about how it is not a place for “politics” and how we should be telling Saudi and Qatar, not us. The brother who gave the lecture stayed patient as the other yelled, saying “Calm down ahkhi, not now ahkhi, please, this isnt the place nor the time to be yelling.” I just want to address this issue at hand….

First of all, we are told that when one of our brothers or sisters in Islam faces distress, we need to help them. I also think it is important to remember that if it were us in that situation, we would be begging Allah subhana wa t’ala for help, and making dua that others were making dua for us. If it were our family over in Syria, (or Yemen, or anywhere else) we would want anyone who was able to help our family, to help them. Hence, if there is ever a khutbah in the masjid, and there is something you do not agree with, dont be so arrogant and yell out for the brother to stop talking. Dont stay. Leave for the sake of Allah and keep your comments to yourself, and discuss them after, in a civil conversation. Just this morning, these screenshots were on the news… I feel very ashamed for that brother who had the terrible urge to voice his opinion yesterday…

Sisters Quran classes

Alhamdulillah I now attend a sisters Quran class with Sadaf, a wonderful sister mashaAllah whos’ daughters go to private school with my son. There are around 9-11 sisters who gather and a Syrian sister, Raina, teaches us tajweed, (barakallah fikum). It is wonderful to get together and not worry about my son and daughter (he is in school at this time and my daughter stayed with my mother alhamdulillah). It is a nice break from the monotony of pre-health science classes! We are working on Fatiah, Asr, Kawthar, and Masad. We are learning in arabic with english tafseer. Allah bless the sisters and their families involved in making this possible.

New Committee for Revert Sisters alhamdulillah!

Alhamdulillah so last night I went to a community discussion panal on what programs are needed for, and which issues, which new life challenges reverts are facing. InshaAllah there will be a series of panals and we will talk with the sisters and brothers, those born muslim and those who are reverts, and see what is needed for the community as a whole inshaAllah. It looks like it will be a good project insha’Allah. Keep coming back to hear more!

For my daughter…

Asalaamu alaikum sisters,

Okay I am soo excited I cant sit still subhanAllah. Here is my news… even though I take my daughter to speech therapy, she is still non-verbal because of her trach and although she knows some signs, it is frustrating to understand what she wants at times alhamdulillah. This is why I have come up with the idea to make her a PECS board/album. For those who do not know what that is, it is a “picture exchange system“. These run upwards of $150 in the assisted needs stores. Im making her one for $15. What you do is get a large bristol board or photo album, you print out pictures of everyday activities (i.e bottle of formula, potty, book, outdoors, blowing bubbles, nap, etc) and small pictures of family members. Then you laminate them all. You then cut small strips of sticky back velcro. Stick them to the back of the pictures. You then cut and stick long velcro strips vertically on either the bristol board or pages of photo album, (which ever one you are using) and then place the little laminated cards on the vertical lines. You then teach your daughter or son to get the picture they need at the time and bring it to you to let you know what they want. You can then sign it, if you want to encourage signing as well, but it is just added to your everyday life… think of it as an assistant inshaAllah! As an alternative you can also get those voice recorded photo albums… they tend to run around $30. Here are a couple different ways you can make them… (keep in mind that if you use soft material you can roll it up and take it with you wherever you go… the same with the ones on the rings, just throw them in your purse or daughter’s/son’s bag…
