spelling bee…?

Asalaamu alaikum
Okay so my son and dh and I watched Akeelah and the Bee yesterday night, which is about a young girl who enters the Scripps Annual Spelling Bee (in the United States) and she has a coach and issues with her family and school and so on.

Long story short, I think I will start writing out index cards, with a single word on one side and the definitionand origin on the back of it, and start doing drills with my son daily inshaAllah as an add on to his english curriculum.

Here is the idea though I wanted to share with you… if you know any other homeschoolers in your area, why not have an annual spelling bee of your own? Complete with ribbons and/or trophies, it would encourage the kids to quickly progress through their English work so they have something else positive to concentrate on inshaAllah. You could hold it at the end of the year, or at the beginning of the following school year so they have the summer to study.
